Jewellery Care

How should I care for my Pearl Jewellery?

Every purchase includes pearl care instructions and a chamois for cleaning. Here are some helpful tips: Always put on your jewelry after applying makeup, perfume, and hair products, as certain chemicals can damage pearls. Use the the pearl chamois provided to gently wipe your pearl jewelry before storing it.

Keep your pearl jewelry wrapped in a soft cloth to prevent it from rubbing against harder gemstones or abrasive surfaces.

Periodically clean your pearls by softly wiping them with a cloth moistened in warm water or mild soapy water. Rinse the cloth in fresh water and wipe the pearls dry with a soft cloth. Depending on how frequently they are worn, pearl strands may need to be restrung occasionally.

It is recommended to consult for restringing advice once a year.

How should I care for my Gemstone Jewellery?

Keep your gemstone jewelry away from harsh chemicals, including cleaning products, perfumes, and lotions, as they can damage the stones and affect their appearance.

When not wearing your gemstone jewelry, store it in a soft pouch or jewelry box to protect it from scratches and avoid contact with other pieces. Store each piece separately to prevent them from rubbing against harder gems or abrasive surfaces.

Clean your gemstone jewelry gently with a soft cloth to remove dirt and oils. For a deeper clean, use a mild soap solution and a soft brush to gently scrub around the gemstone. Be sure to rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth.

Extreme temperature changes can cause gemstones to crack or become damaged. Remove jewelry before exposing it to heat or cold, such as when swimming in hot tubs or during extreme weather.

Remove your gemstone jewelry before engaging in activities that may cause impact or rough handling, such as sports or heavy lifting, as this can lead to scratches or chips.

Periodically check the settings of your gemstone jewelry to ensure the stones are secure. If you notice any loose stones or damage, take the piece to a professional jeweler for repairs.

Why do pearls have small markings?

It is extremely rare to find a pearl with a perfectly smooth surface. Birthmarks and subtle variations in texture are natural characteristics of pearls, which are one-of-a-kind gems created by living organisms.

Are pearls durable?

The durability of pearls can vary significantly, as they are not all the same. For example, untreated pearls are generally much more durable than treated ones, with treatments including processes like dyeing, bleaching, and chemical enhancements to improve lustre.

Among cultured pearls, Akoya pearls are typically the most delicate and least durable due to their thin nacre layers. Additionally, Akoya pearls are almost always treated in some way. For reference, an Akoya pearl is considered to be of good quality if its nacre thickness is at least 0.15mm. In contrast, high-quality Australian South Sea pearls generally have nacre that is at least 2mm thick. The natural nacre of Australian South Sea pearls responds well to body oils and similar substances. However, since pearls are primarily composed of calcium carbonate, which is softer than diamonds, they are sensitive to acids that can break down calcium carbonate—just like the enamel of our teeth.
